This year’s English Week took place from 17th January to 21st January. Special highlights included booth games based on a Chinese New Year theme and inter-class choral speaking competition. The booth games boosted students’ interest in learning about the key concepts and vocabulary of the Festival. The inter-class choral speaking competition improved students’ ability and confidence in speaking English. Both attractions maximized students’ exposure to English.
NET Scheme at S.K.H. Lee Shiu Keung Primary School
To create an English-speaking environment to enable students to overcome difficulties in speaking English, our NETs, Mr. Harper and Miss Archana work in partnership with our experienced English language teachers. In addition to undertaking teaching duties to provide students with an authentic English learning environment, they also help develop school-based teaching strategies and curriculum materials, and contribute to the professional development of fellow teachers. Mr Harper works with children at the P.1, P.2 and P.4 levels. Miss Archana works with the children at the P.3, P.5 and P.6 levels. Stimulating and enjoyable activities are conducted to enhance teaching and learning.
To better equip our students for a successful secondary school admission interview, Miss Archana, Mr. Harper and the English teachers conducted an interview workshop for P.6 students in December. Through teachers’ rote model and mock interview workshop, students learnt about the basic steps and techniques of interpersonal communication and language usage. Students were able to indicate their strength and weaknesses through the mock interview workshop because each of them took turns to be the interviewer, interviewee and the observer. They were able to indicate their strength and weaknesses through peer-evaluation.
Letter to Mr. Harper
To improve students’ letter writing skills, Mr. Harper wrote a letter to all the students at Christmas and Chinese New Year. Most of the students were eager to reply to Mr. Harper’s letter because Mr. Harper told them about his two kids in his letters. They told Mr. Harper how they spent their holidays and they also suggested to Mr. Harper where he could go during the holidays. Some students were so sweet and caring that they even attached some coupons for Mr. Harper in their reply letters.
